Sleep apnea and the workplace

A National Sleep Foundation Poll in the United States has found that nearly 1 in 3 people are classified as “at-risk for any sleep disorder”.1

If you suffer from sleep apnea, you probably experience the following symptoms:

  • Fatigue
  • Daytime drowsiness
  • Reduced level of alertness
  • Impaired concentration
  • Forgetfulness

These side effects of sleep apnea can negatively impact your work performance and productivity.1 Indeed, not getting enough sleep can lead to:

  • Impaired reaction time
  • Impaired listening skills
  • Problems making decisions
  • Problems with information processing and short-term memory
  • Decreased vigilance and motivation
  • Increased moodiness and aggressive behavior

If you have sleep apnea, you are more likely to come in late to work, fall asleep, make errors and get injured on the job.1 Approximately 13% of work injuries are attributed to sleep problems. In addition, employees with sleep problems run double the risk of being injured at work.
